Kids and Halloween

Aside from Christmas, Halloween is one of children's favorite holidays. Costumes, candy, and parties…Oh my! Whether you are planning a Halloween party for many kids or just looking to keep your own children entertained, there are plenty of ways to keep Halloween safe and healthy.

Kid Halloween Activities

As soon as pumpkin patches starting popping up in the neighborhood, you know Halloween is just around the corner. Pumpkin patches offer a number of fun Halloween activities for children. Aside from letting them pick out their favorite pumpkins, kids can also visit petting zoos, see overgrown pumpkins, and snack on Halloween treats.

The activities don't stop after the pumpkin patch. Once you get home, you can have a pumpkin carving contest. Children can make their own stencils and then trace the patterns onto the pumpkin. To be on the safe side and prevent any accidents, you may want to purchase a dull knife specifically designed for carving pumpkins.

Halloween Safety Tips

One of children's most favorite Halloween traditions is trick-or-treating. Collecting mounds and mounds of free candy…it's every kid's dream. However, the idea of candy from strangers is not as ideal for parents. Halloween can be fun and safe with the proper precaution.

If your children are going trick-or-treating, make sure that at least one adult accompanies them. While it might be hard to get your children out and back before dark, you can set a firm time limit on how long they are allowed to be out. Fixing a curfew will ensure that your kids are not out too late.

Once your kids return from trick-or-treating, remember to go through and examine their candy before they eat it. Throw away any open, unwrapped, or otherwise suspicious looking treats.

If you have younger kids or would just rather not have your kids trick-or-treat in the neighborhood, there are alternatives to trick-or-treating. Malls and retail stores often simulate the trick-or-treating experience for kids, giving away candy on Halloween during the early evening hours. You can also throw a Halloween party that will keep the fun inside, rather than on the street.
